All over California, kids with special educational needs are ignored because they don’t have a diagnosis. They are told they “just aren’t trying hard enough,” when the school is not helping them at all.  Their school may only give accommodations to children with severe learning disabilities, ignoring ones like dyslexia and ADHD, or even high functioning autism, not giving some kids the extra help they need. Even if they do get extra help, it often does not meet their needs very well.

A bill presented by the forum education committee aims to change this by introducing a program for middle and high schoolers. The program is similar to a study hall. At the end of the school day 3 days a week will enter a class with tutoring services and extra time to study. The class will have a teacher certified to work with special needs kids supervising it. There will be at least one teacher for every twenty students enrolled. If available, students would even be able to switch between teachers. This bill provides much needed help for children with conditions such as ADHD and dyslexia, offering some extra time and tutoring instead of ignoring them.
