Lumi Cushing, of the Westchester delegation, is one of your new and amazing Forum Presiding Officers. Recently turned 15, Lumi enjoys ballet, playing the piano, and taking relaxing walks with her friends. Though it may not be for everybody, Lumi enjoys “sad” music; some of her favorite artists being Lizzie McAlpine, The Chicks, and Bruno Major, and favorite songs include “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack and “Above The Chinese Restaurant” by Laufey. Having been an avid member of her school’s Model United Nations club for 3 years, and having a passion for debate, Lumi was compelled to join Youth and Government this year. Feeling overwhelming support from her delegation pushed Lumi to run for Forum Presiding Officer. After a thrilling campaign, the officer recalls mixed feelings of shock, relief, and excitement as her name was announced to the crowd filled with her peers and supporters, declaring her the one of the 76th Forum Presiding Officers. Since claiming her position, Lumi has become good friends with her fellow Forum Presiding Officer, Zora McCoy, and built friendships with various leaders and forum members. With aspirations to become an Emergency Medical Technician, Lumi is interested in her sports medicine class and some EMT focused rom-com books. Powerful women have influenced Lumi’s journey through life, such as the inspiring “Lady with The Lamp”, Florence Nightingale, acting as a great role model for women in medicine. Her mother has as well been a great inspiration to Lumi, setting the precedent of working hard and finding balance in life. In her time as part of YNG, Lumi hopes to create new connections with her peers, and to shine a brighter spotlight on the Forum section of the program. Lumi Cushing’s warm presence in Youth and Government, and hard working mindset will continue to improve the program through Forum, and on the whole. Make sure to bring a life jacket because she is sure to make waves.
