The wonderful Zora McCoy, from the Foothills delegation (Foothills!), is one of your new 76th Forum Presiding Officers. When she’s not presiding over the forum or attending a Youth and Government meeting, 15 year old Zora can be found with her school’s speech and debate team, student advisory, or exploring the outdoors, where she finds comfort in being part of something bigger than herself. She savors the smaller moments in life, while also appreciating the bigger picture. Along with playing guitar and recently beginning to pluck away at the banjo, this officer likes to listen to lots of folk and rock music. Her favorite artists include Violent Femmes, Fleet Foxes, and Death Cab For Cutie, and a couple of her top songs right now are “The Shrine / An Argument” by Fleet Foxes, and “Georgia, Georgia” by Elliot Smith.

Zora’s interest in history and appreciation for different cultures and stories have sparked her interest in doing international work in the future. Her background in student leadership, as 7th grade vice president, 8th grade ASB president, and a current member of student council at her school, as well as a recommendation from Chief of Staff, Lola Stark (Foothills), pushed Zora to join the YNG family. Arriving at Camp BOB with nothing but a bag of lollipops and a whole lot of passion, McCoy built a campaign through creating connections with her peers. This position was something Zora wanted to attain because she enjoys having leadership positions where she has the power to give people a voice. While having this seat as Forum Presiding Officer, Zora wants to have fun for the most part, as well as learn about our government system, and create a space for people to feel comfortable to say their piece and be heard. Someone that has inspired Zora since day one, is her grandfather. Born in a refugee camp in Libya, he used hard work and charisma to reach his education, and earned a scholarship at USC, making his way to America, where he started a family. Her grandfather has set the example of valuing connections and forming bonds with others, contributing tremendously to Officer McCoy’s character today. Talking with Zora brought me a sense of comfort, realizing that at the end of the day she is like the rest of us, just human; if you see her around, I recommend you say hi!
