What is the Department of Finance? The Department of Finance, also known as DOF, has shown how they are making bills and proposals to help society. There are three groups–red, white, blue–which have different topics, including criminal justice, environmental issues, and transportation. In each of these groups, delegates present proposals to each group’s board members, who are the program’s elected leaders. The board members select proposals that they believe will make for the strongest overall budget proposal, when the blue, white and red groups pit their proposals against one another.

In the White group, Jeremy Juarez from the CulverPalms Family Delegation, passionately proposed to “tax online gambling apps like PrizePicks, Draft Kings.” He said, “I plan on taxing 12.5% on the consumer.” and thinks this will help stop underage gambling and people to gamble a huge amount of money. “There is no competition and I am the competition,” he confidently said about his proposal when asked if he feels a sense of competition..

In the Blue Group, Ella Pak from the Foothills Delegation, has the budget proposal topics of housing and homelessness. Ella wants to “provide apartment complexes by taxing E-cigarettes.” When asked if she feels a sense of competition around her proposal, Ellasaid, “no not really.” Herreason was that her proposal has a greater impact on society and how it can shape the future better.

In the Red Group, Zach McCollum from the Newport Harbor Delegation is in the transportation group and his proposal is a “2% tax rebate for people who drive electric and hybrid cars.” His confident his research will convince the board members to vote for his proposal.

Department of Finance delegates planned to select a final budget proposal Sunday afternoon.
