Friendship is something everyone should have the chance to experience. Whether it’s a chuckle with a stranger or holding the door open for someone you don’t know, feelings of fellowship are all around; however, not everybody is an expert in the arena that is socializing. Youth and Government encourages high schoolers to open their hearts and speak their minds. In Y&G, teenagers will learn to debate, voice their opinion, boost their peers, and – most of all – make long lasting connections.

The friendships displayed within the realm of Youth and Government are not confined -nor reduced – to the duration of the program; they persist long after the gavel is struck and the final session is adjourned. Through social media platforms and alumni networks, former participants stay connected, offering support and mentorship to one another as they steer their academic and professional journeys.

Alliances conceived within Youth and Government settings illuminate camaraderie; they embody trust, empathy, and requited  respect. Desert Family delegate, Abby Abiang refers to the program as “a fun and educational way to make friends and learn how the government works at a young age.” As individuals navigate unique policy discussions and advocate for their beliefs, friendships serve as a source of comfort and understanding.

This program provides a social experience that isn’t seen anywhere else, giving teens from all over California  the opportunity to meet people with the same interests as them. They have the unique privilege to ask the questions they’ve never gotten answers to.

Moreover, Youth and Government acts as a transformative stage for adolescents who may struggle with socializing or expressing themselves. By providing a monitored, realistic environment for debate, discussion, and collaboration, the program motivates  young people to find their voice and connect with others. Through guided interactions and mentorship opportunities, participants learn to navigate social dynamics with confidence and empathy, laying the groundwork for meaningful friendships.
