Welcome to another edition of the Daily Bill. Today’s topic is Sonoma Family YMCA and the delegation’s firearm safety bill.

Their act reads, “An act to amend Section 31640 of the Penal Code, relating to firearms.” The bill would amend the  process of obtaining a gun license in California to align with standards for obtaining a conceal and carry permit.

This includes a 16 hour course on firearm safety and live fire shooting exercises. This would also encourage private companies to conduct training with authorization from the State of California, according to the proposed bill.

I interviewed the bill sponsor, Senator Loyalty Andrade, who said “This bill would benefit the California gun system by making it harder to obtain a gun while a required training program would make quick purchase harder.”

She also addressed the possible backlash this bill could have with the public. “This bill would make purchasing a gun more expensive which could have public backlash,” Andrade said. Andrade wrote the bill because of the gun threat made on the Jodel app last year at Camp Roberts. Andrade also mentioned gun violence in Sonoma County which reached a 10-year peak in 2022, according to the Press Democrat.

The bill passed in its Senate committee, but failed in the second round of voting. I hope you enjoyed today’s edition of the Daily Bill. Have a great day!
