Nicholas Alvarez of DaVinci Delegation

After a gun threat on Jodel, an online anonymous social app, at Camp Roberts, Youth and Government (Y&G) has instituted a new security policy. This involves a single file line where everyone has to be scanned before entering the Sacramento Convention Center.

Delegates from the Albany Delegation Lucas Coverwell and Lucas Conway waited 15 minutes both on Friday and Saturday. Another delegate, Ari Mendel, of the Berkeley Delegation, waited in the line for 30 minutes Friday.

Coverwell, Conway and Mendel called these lines “egregious” and the security measures “over reactions.” Delegates Zariya King and Winta Clark had a perfect view of the line from their hotel room and they strategically watched as the line got shorter. They saw their opportunity to get in line and only waited for about five minutes. Conway and Mendel prepared in a different way. They purposely showed up late so they wouldn’t have to wait in line.

After we informed the delegates interviewed by The Daily Delegate for this story about the reason for the lines, they expressed different opinions about Jodel and critiques about the Y and G program.

Delegate Winta Clark noted that all the security measures combined with the advisors monitoring the Jodel posts has made herself “want[ing] to post less.” Delegate Ryan Lang said Jodel is a “dead app.”
