This bill proposes that all schools provide a mandatory ADHD screening test for children in third grade. ADHD is often overlooked in young children and is mistaken for energy or immaturity in little kids. The bill proposes that starting in the 2026-2027 school year, all parents or guardians of children entering third grade are required to fill out an NIH approved ADHD screening test. If this test shows that the child exhibits signs of ADHD, the teacher of the child will be directed to the test. Then, the child will be directed to be officially diagnosed by a medical professional.
The assessments given would be quick forms including questions about individualized instruction and the child’s progress and learning needs. It will also allow teachers and parents to discuss what the child’s needs are in a more informed way. The state-funded schools will be responsible for providing the test, just as it does when testing young students for dyslexia.
