Access provides support to immigrants in California, which holds the
largest immigration population in the United States since the 17th
century. Nearly half of these immigrants have children born in California
who attend public schools. However, the state government often fails to
provide adequate education and information about their rights and
benefits. To address this issue, this bill requires every public, private,
and charter school in California to display the phone number of the U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on the back of every
student’s ID. This ensures that every student, regardless of their legal
status, has access to help and information. Unfortunately, the education
surrounding the rights of immigrants is rarely discussed in schools, and
It’s even discouraged. In a place where students should be able to learn
and comfortably ask about their rights and benefits, this lack of
information creates a gap that needs to be filled. Providing unspoken
facts through an easy-to-access information hotline is a simple yet
effective way to help those in the dark. This hotline can educate not only
the children of immigrants but also all of the youth of California,
empowering them to help those outside the school system. Accessing an
access code to further knowledge of immigration allows students to
reach out to community members who need it,further spreading key
information that benefits those most in need. Additionally, the bill’s
effectiveness and simplicity make it potentially expandable across the
rest of the U.S. The implementation of an access line for nearly 23% of
the population in California provides support for those who are left in
the dark.
