Jodel is a completely anonymous social networking app that allows you to view and only see posts by people in your area. For years delegates have been using the app during conferences as a way to stay connected. Yet in more recent years, post pandemic, Jodel seems to be doing more harm than good.

When asking a few delegates how they feel about Jodel in general the response was mostly negative.

“It’s a breeding ground for hatred,” said Morgan Atoms, a Delegate from The  DaVinci Delegation.

“I think that it’s more harmful than good. From what I’ve seen, it leaves people with a feeling of self consciousness. For example, if someone is speaking in front of a group, who knows if someone will be talking bad about them on Jodel.” Said Michelle C. from The Da Vinci Delegation.

DOSE JODEL CAMPAINING WORK?

When talking with Delegates about what they would typically see when they open up the Jodel app, and over half mentioned posts advertising candidates. Though this may seem like a good form of campaigning, it can become like ads and will often be ignored or seen as annoying. Most Delegates say that campaigning in person is more impactful.

“In person Campaigning allows me to get a better feel of the Candidates personality and overall is more impactfulful.” Said Molly from CPY.

 CAN RUMORS CHANGE VOTES?

CAN WE STOP IT?

After the gun threat that was posted on jodel last year, the app proved to be a problem and The Y encouraged delegates to delete it.

“It’s not something they can directly step into without infringing on privacy.” Said Natalya Puga from the DaVinci Delegation.

This year, the app hadn’t been mentioned at all. The best thing we can do to stop the spread of rumors and hate is to delete the app and stop mentioning it to others.

“ If we do nothing, it could make people feel scared to speak and especially run for statewide positions.” Said Chloe from The DaVinci Delegation.
