Stepping Beyond Comfort: How Growth Happens in Y&G
The human brain is wired to prioritize safety, predictability, and minimal risk. This is why so many people struggle with stepping out of their comfort zone: they don’t know what the outcome will be. For these reasons, glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is considered the world’s greatest fear. People standing up and speaking out creates a moment of vulnerability and risks social rejection. Despite this instinct existing to protect us, sometimes it only makes it easier for us to miss out on amazing experiences that have the potential to boost growth.
Many delegates, even the most experienced, start Youth and Government with feelings of uncertainty. This is totally understandable; being in a new environment with new people can be overwhelming. However, participation is key to creating highlights and memories at Camp Bob and Sac.
It’s important to remember that the confidence to speak out doesn’t just grow overnight. It has to be built through repetition and exposure. These small moments that seem difficult at first become easier with time. Y&G creates a safe environment where delegates can, and are even encouraged, to take risks and make mistakes. It’s learning from these mistakes that really stimulate growth. Every debate, question, and comment create new layers of experience. Growth comes from persistence, not perfection. By embracing these flaws and continuing onward, discipline is built, which is needed for long-term success.

Growth rarely happens in areas where we are completely comfortable. In Youth and Government, moments of uncertainty are often what shape confidence, leadership, and voice. Raising a hand, sharing a thought; these are what give us the courage to continue speaking out. Stepping out of our comfort zone, out of what is safe and predictable, is what will eventually build character to do things delegates never even thought they could do.
Y&G isn’t just about legislation and debate. The experiences within the program encourage delegates to test their own limits and redefine what they think they are capable of. The hesitation, courage, and growth are all part of a personal experience that has a different meaning for each delegate. Despite this, the message to everyone is the same: stepping outside of your comfort zone is where the real growth begins to show.
