When we think of alcohol abuse, many know that these addictions lead back to their teenage years. While some can be due to broken homes and normalized alcoholic behavior environments, others can be merely due to peer pressure. These acts surrounding binge drinking culture often puts teens at both health risks and penalized risks by law. But how many teens actually know about the risks and penalties of drinking? The California minors rights assembly believes the California school system is partially responsible for these ignorances because of their educational environment and circumstances. Most teens now are learning about alcohol through an hour long online summer health course, which the majority of students end up skimming over. The assembly of minors rights proposes the idea that this course should be taught in class by former alcoholic guest speakers. These sober individuals would share their personal stories and experiences. This would help create a visible, influential, and therefore lasting impact on these students. Some may say our school systems are unable to financially prioritize this course over standard classes such as math and English, which aren’t meeting the test score requirements. While the committee minors rights assembly does acknowledge the needs for these issues, they also feel that the subject of alcohol is far under acknowledged and is just as if not more crucial for improving our society.
