Constitutional Convention, popularly known as ConCon, is a debate focused program area. While most program areas use parliamentary procedure (parli pro) for debate, ConCon offers a unique experience where delegates only use parli pro for voting but not for debates. Marina Avramenko from the Yarrow delegation, says that this casual yet formal style of debate, “makes it feel really easy to speak, and there isn’t an immense pressure to speak”. This program area is perfect for delegates who want to step out of their comfort zone and improve their public speaking in a low-stakes environment. Both returners that were interviewed expressed that there is nothing about this program area that they would change. Nina Milavski, from the CPY Delegation, who experienced this program area for the first time said, “not everything has to be taken super seriously.” Giana Binder, also a CPY delegate who is new to ConCon, also added that it’s “very collaborative and there’s time to meet new people”.
A program area that is similar to ConCon is Icon. In Icon delegates try to make an international constitution, which is different since ConCon just focuses on California. Kiley Kim from the CPY delegation says that Icon is based on “fast paced style debate, not following parliamentary precedure.” Delegates from all around expressed that they love Icon because of its unserious ConCon style debate. While ConCon and Icon focus on different things, overall they’re both very similar. Eli from the CPY delegation talks about how he really enjoys the style of debate and the supportiveness of everyone in Icon. Since everyone is very supportive in Icon, people feel comfortable speaking in front of everyone and participating in the fast-paced debates. Overall, ConCon and Icon are loved by many delegates and they’re a great place for new delegates to come out of their shells.
